California Bans Recording Devices In Movie Theaters [WSJ]
A California law set to take effect Jan. 1 makes it illegal to take recording devices into movie theaters. AP reports that moviegoers will be able to make citizens' arrests if they see anyone with camcorders or similar devices; signs will be posted notifying patrons of the law. "This industry is the economic engine that moves this city," Police Chief William Bratton said at a City Hall press conference on Thursday. The bill mainly targets camcorders, which produce 92 percent of illegal copies of films that appear online or on street corners, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. The group is seeking to enact similar laws in other states and is backing an effort to make the illegal taping of films a federal felony.
